Can you live this fantasy life? According to Ute legend, evil creatures that were living in the dark decided to dig their way to the surface to take over the world above, while other spiritual forces summoned the North God, who froze the Devil Chief, the Great Mother Witch, the Magician and all the rest in their place the moment the cold struck long ago. When the West Wind blew, the ice melted, the dust set, and the monsters now stand in the pit they dug, all of them turned to stone as a warning to the evil ones in hell to leave the good green Earth alone. Apparently, they could not live their fantasy life.

Oddly, the Aldo Nova song was playing in this demented head of mine on our way there, and it still does when I think of the place. Those who visit see many shapes and characters in the hardened sandstone, as did I, but I will let your imagination decide what you see.

While ambling through this geologic oddity, we wondered what catalyst could have caused these almost vertical thin sheets to set in such a planar way. Could it have been acidic, or volcanic, or some other cataclysmic event? Being that I’m not a geologist, it didn’t matter that neither of us had the answer, but it sparked a conversation that continued through most of our visit, which is a very good thing.

Today we went for a drive the shorter but harder way, and I believe the truck made it through unscathed. These wussies also put in a whopping 3-mile round trip hike, but regretably in full-sun 90° heat, surviving just like the truck. We also got to catch up with our friends Tom & Justine, who we are pleased to say will be camping along with us later in the week. We will be moving to new locations the next two days, and hope to get going early to allow some hiking or sightseeing during our short stay.
