OVERNIGHTING

TJ

8/13/2023

We weren’t sure if we were going to stop in Lewistown or Harlowton and had two different places picked out, that if the first wasn’t up to par, we would head to the second. We pulled in to Kiwanis Club Campground in Lewiston, expecting to stay a night or two, then stayed for five, and later passed through Harlowton without stopping.

Kiwanis Club Campground & Rest Area was a busy little hub, but the fair was going on, as well as the rodeo, during our stay. RV’s would be pulling in sometimes as late as midnight to park for the night. There is a 10-day limit for staying. There was a mix of RV, tent and car camping every night. While they have a restroom with running water, there are no showers, as also there is no dump station or electric. We saw many ground squirrels sneaking around for a snack. On my more aching days, I could go out and watch them to ease my mind of the discomfort. If parking on the grass, be aware that the ground squirrels holes are hidden well but can be quite large. The regional airport borders the property. By day, there were a few planes taking off and landing from time to time, but I wouldn’t say it was overly disruptive. At night it was quiet with the exception of louder vehicles passing by on the highway. We still rested well. Town & Country Foods is across the street making groceries easily accessible.

I think we encountered hail every evening of our stay. While most times it was pea-sized and short lasting, our last night had quarter-sized and lasted around 20 minutes. The winds had picked up heavily, so we pulled in the slides just prior. Suki was not fond of the confinement, or especially the pummeling noises from above. After the storm, many of the stayers checked that there were no damages, congregated to discuss their experiences, then took in the surreal clouds, and while most nights provided beautiful sunset, this one was spectacular. Overall, we enjoyed staying here and will again if in the area. Thank you Kiwanis Club for providing and maintaining this wonderful respite for weary travelers!
